Whats with the Brandable Domain hype?

These days, if you follow domaining or the sky-rocketing values of non TLD domains, you can’t trip without hearing the term “brandable domains”.

Whats the deal? I mean, why all the buzz with the term branding and brandable domains, anyways? Such a vague term, isn’t it? And why branding?

Lets investigate…

Brandable domains are words or phrases that are chosen to best describe what the sites content is about…not to be confused with keywords domains. If you remember goto.com…that was an example of a domain that was clearly keywords driven, yet the good folks at overture.com had no problem dumping the keyword domain for a term that was much more vague, but yet brandable.

The famous one everyone likes to compare is of course Google. What in the word google brings to mind search? Nothing. But it IS memorable, isn’t it. So is overture. Thats not to say that you cant get some luck with a keyword destined domain, you can, but brandable terms are the latest rage, and with proper SEO/SEM you can turn a relatively obscure, but MEMORABLE word/phrase into a real hit.

Another term that is interwoven with the term brandability, and it has very similar meaning. Marketability when mentioned with domains is the opportunity to promote a domain that is easy to say, and understand once promoted. Marketability is usually accomplished alongside branding…it is pretty difficult to separate the two.

Aside from brandability and marketability, the generic domains that clearly describe the website are still a home-run, and when discovered, will produce excellent returns.
