Here are a few stories to read this Monday morning.

  • The Virginia state legislature is considering a bill which would limit how schools can ban books.
  • The governor of New York is pushing for curriculum changes as a solution to low reading and comprehension scores on standardized tests.  I think she is fundamentally wrong here; based on what I am hearing from teachers, the problem is less what is being taught than the system in which it’s being taught (students who don’t perform at grade level are getting passed on to the next when they should be held back).
  • The new Nook tablet is a rebranded 9″ Android tablet from Lenovo.
  • During the ebook heyday The Guardian maintained an editorial policy of hating ebooks, bashing them at every opportunity.  Apparently this has not changed.
  • A new notation system for writing numbers invented in an Inuit school thirty years ago has been added to Unicode, the international standard for representing languages on the web.
